I, COMIC is the newest part of our initiative. It is a unique book that will be part DIY comic, with blank and paneled pages and drawing and writing prompts—and also feature original art by industry professionals as well as pro tips and personal stories and anecdotes. I, COMIC focuses on fostering literacy, building mastery, improving emotional wellness, and encouraging self-confidence and self-expression.

I, COMIC will be 100% crowdfunded and not-for-profit, with copies being distributed first in a New York State pilot program at several correctional facilities in our continuing partnership with NYPL Jail & Prison Services. Then we'd love to expand to every correctional facility in the state so that every incarcerated individual owns their own copy of I, COMIC. as well as students in justice-impacted communities. Your donations will go towards paying the artists who are contributing (we already have some AMAZING KICK-ASS creators on board!); hiring an educational consultant to maximize the benefits of this book; publishing a high quality product with pages thick enough to draw, write, and doodle on; and distributing it not just to correctional facilities, but also hopefully to youth and emerging adults who are affected by the carceral system

Its component of art education is significant. Studies in California showed that incarcerated citizens who participated in art programs for only six months had 15% fewer parole violations; after two years of participation, they had 30% fewer parole violations. A remarkable 75% of program participants had fewer disciplinary infractions while incarcerated. Research shows that students outside the carceral system benefit enormously by participating in art education as well.
